Women's Volleyball Sweeps Into Championship Match
NEW LONDON, Conn., Nov. 5, 2004 -- In a rematch of last season's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship match, defending champion and third-seeded
Springfield College beat second-seeded MIT, 3-0, on Friday night.
The Pride will take on top-seed and host Coast Guard (28-1) in the conference title match on Saturday at 4 p.m. in New London. The winner earns the NEWMAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Christine Jones had 12 kills and Ashley Reves added 11 kills and 17 digs for the Pride (24-7). Mary Kathryn O'Neil added seven blocks.
MIT led 29-28 in game one before the Pride scored three straight to
go up 1-0. SC won game two 30-22 and game three 30-17.
Arlis Reynolds led MIT with 12 kills and 10 digs while Caroline
Jordan added 11 kills and nine digs.
Corinne McCormack had 23 kills and 19 digs as
top-seeded Coast Guard beat fifth-seeded Wellesley 3-1 (31-29, 30-28, 26-30,
30-25) to win its school-record 19th straight match and advance to its first NEWMAC championship match.

Mary Arvidson had 12 kills while Tracy Speelhoffer and Lis Bosma
each added 11 kills for the Bears (28-1). Speelhoffer led Coast Guard with
16 digs while Stephanie Kimmel added 14 for the Bears. Christine Rostowfske
led the Bears with 52 assists to go with her 13 digs.
Coast Guard fought off a game point in the first game and scored the
final three points for a 31-29 win and the Bears won game two 30-28.
In game three, Wellesley trailed 25-21 and then scored nine of the
final 10 points to win it 30-26 and force a fourth game.
Wellesley led game four 24-21 before Coast Guard scored nine of the
final 10 points to secure the match.
Danielle Lingg led Wellesley (19-12) with 18 kills while Murielle
Dawdy and Sarah Boone each added 16 kills to go with her team-high 13 digs.
