Women's Volleyball Advances To Championship Bracket In VBHOF Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 22, 2004 – Springfield College junior All-American Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) totaled 10 kills to lead SC past the MIT Engineers in the second round of pool play, 3-0 (30-26, 30-16, 30-28), in the Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament tonight in Blake Arena.
Springfield College senior outside hitter Christine Jones (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore outside hitter Jody Pfeifer (Northglenn, Colo.) had eight kills apiece.
Junior opposite Arlis Reynolds (Costa Mesa, Calif.) collected 11 kills and 14 digs for the Engineers.
The Pride, who dropped a 3-1 decision to MIT last Tuesday, held the Engineers to a microscopic .074 hitting percentage for the match.
Springfield moves onto the Championship bracket and is in action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Smith College, while MIT will play at 9 a.m. at Smith.
Bowdoin College, who defeated Bridgewater St. College in second-round action, 3-0 (30-23, 30-28, 30-26), will play tomorrow at Mt. Holyoke at 11 a.m. Bridgewater St. will also play at Mt. Holyoke at 9 a.m.
In first round action, Jones collected 13 kills on 27 swings for a .333 hitting percentage to lead Springfield to its opening round win over Bridgewater St., 3-0 (30-24, 30-20, 30-22).
Sophomore Mary Kathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) added 12 kills and junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) was credited with 16 digs for the Pride’s cause.
Bridgewater St. junior outside hitter Melissa Machado (Fairhaven, Mass.) had 11 digs in the losing effort for the Bears.
In other first-round pool play, MIT topped Bowdoin, 3-0 (30-24, 31-29, 30-23).
