No. 19 Football Stops No. 25 Kings Point, 49-28
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 20, 2003 – Springfield College junior quarterback Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown, and threw for 128 yards and three scores as the 19th-ranked Pride defeated 25th-ranked Kings Point, 49-28, in a Freedom Football Conference game at Benedum Field this afternoon.
Today’s game was the conference-opener and home opener for the Pride, which improved to 3-0 overall. The Mariners fall to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the FFC.
SC junior fullback Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) ran for a career-best 172 yards on 23 carries. Defensively, senior strong safety Ryan Santo (Warwick, R.I.) made 11 tackles and forced a fumble. The Pride’s defense held All-American tailback David McNeal to just 56 yards on 20 carries. McNeal entered this afternoon’s game as the conference’s leading rusher at 143.0 yards-per-game.
Sylvia hooked with senior spilt Farrand Violette (Houston, Texas) for a 60-yard score with 4:40 left in the first quarter. After McNeal scored on a one-yard run early in the second quarter, SC senior halfback Dustin Grosso (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored on a 10-yard jaunt with 11:17 remaining in the half. The Pride extended the lead to 21-7 on junior quarterback Michael Judge’s (Chatham, N.J.) one-yard rush at 6:47.
In the third quarter, Sylvia punched one in from two yards out to make the score, 28-7. The Mariners cut the lead to 28-14 two minutes later, but Sylvia responded by throwing a 23-yard TD pass to junior tight end Louis Conte (Agawam, Mass.) to give SC a 21-point lead with 4:34 to play in the third. With :02 left in the quarter, Sylvia fired a 29-yard scoring strike to senior spilt end Jackson Browne (Arundel, Maine) to give SC a 42-21 advantage.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
