No. 19 Football Knocked Out Of NCAA Tournament
Brockport, N.Y., Nov. 23, 2002 - The 2002 Springfield College football season came to an end with a 16-0 loss to SUNY Brockport in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament this afternoon in sloppy conditions at Special Olympics Stadium.The Pride was led by sophomore fullback Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, Conn.) who had 74 yards on 23 carries.
The Golden Eagles shut down the Pride's offensive attack, limiting SC to a season-low 134 rushing yards and 154 total yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Springfield sophomore linebacker Justin Fletcher (Orwell, Vt.) made 11 tackles, two for a loss and senior safety Joe Pedemonti (Manchester, Conn.) had eight tackles with one forced fumble and an interception.
Brockport placekicker Mike Laney got the scoring going with a 25 yard field goal at 3:57 of the first quarter. With 6:30 left in the first half, the Pride stopped the Golden Eagles on fourth and goal from the 1 yard line when quarterback Anthony Mayes pass fell incomplete. On the next drive, SC junior defensive back Mike Kimmel (Peabody, Mass.) broke up another Mayes pass attempt on fourth and goal from the 3 yard line with :35 left in the half.
The Golden Eagles converted on the opening drive of the second half when Adam Webster scored on a 4-yard run to cap a five play 65-yard drive. Just under 4 minutes later, Brockport's Jeremy Lynch returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 16-0

Head Coach Mike DeLong
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
