Football Rolls Past Salve Regina, 69-0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 6, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore fullback Will Davis (Cumberland, R.I.) rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the first half to lead the Pride to a 69-0 win over visiting Salve Regina in the season opener for both teams at Benedum Field.
The Pride’s 69 points was the fourth-highest point total in the 109-year history of the program. SC rushed for 553 yards, which was 33 yards shy of the school record of 586 yards.
Davis was one of six SC players to score touchdowns. Sophomore fullback Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns, and senior halfback Dustin Grosso (Glen Cove, N.Y.) added 73 yards and a score on the ground.
The Pride (1-0) jumped out to a 35-0 first-quarter lead. Sophomore halfback Kevin Domurat (Forestdale, Mass.) got SC on the board at 10:17 with a two-yard scoring run, and sophomore quarteback Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) added a one-yard touchdown just 58 seconds later. Lutgens made it 21-0 on a 64-yard TD run with 6:43 left in the quarter, then Davis scored on runs of three and 40 yards to give SC a 35-0 lead.
Springfield College opens the Freedom Football Conference portion of the schedule on Sat., Sept. 21 at Kings Point (N.Y.).

Head Coach Mike DeLong

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
