Football Rallies Past Norwich, 41-24; Captures FFC Crown
NORWICH, Vt., Nov. 9, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore halfback Kevin Domurat (Forestdale, Mass.) rushed for a career-high 133 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries to rally the Pride past Norwich, 41-24, in a Freedom Football Conference FFC) game at Sabine Field this afternoon.
With the win, SC (7-1, 6-0 FFC) captures the FFC Championship outright for the fourth time in six seasons. This marks the third time in five seasons the Pride has posted a 6-0 mark in FFC play. SC earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Sophomore fullback Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y) added 122 yards and a touchdown for SC, which entered the game ranked third nationally in rushing yardage (346.3 yards-per-game), and piled up 423 yards on the ground this afternoon.
The sophomore quarterback platoon of Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) and Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) combined for 84 yards and one TD on the ground, and 3-of-8 passing (64 yards), including second-half scoring strikes of 22 and 34 yards to rally SC, which trailed by as many as 14 points.
After spotting Norwich (4-5, 2-3 FFC) a 14-0 first-quarter lead, Domurat got the Pride on the board with an eight-yard TD run at 10:11 of the second quarter. Lutgens evened the score at 14-14 on a three-yard scoring jaunt with 3:12 to play in the half. The Cadets, however, scored 10 points in the final 1:05 of the half to take a 24-14 lead at intermission.
SC responded in the third quarter as Judge hit senior split end Farrand Violette (Houston, Texas) with a 22-yard touchdown pass at 10:11 to make it a three-point game (24-21). It stayed that way until Sylvia hooked up with senior split end Jay Curtis (Princeton, N.J.) for a 34-yard score to give the Pride a 28-24 lead with 8:34 left in the game. Domurat exploded for a 53-yard TD run with 4:23 to play to extend the lead to 11 (35-24). Sylvia capped the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown with 1:21 on the clock.
The Pride host Union (N.Y.) in its regular-season finale on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. at Benedum Field.

Head Coach Mike DeLong

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
