No. 4 Football Falls To No. 24 St. John Fisher, 45-24
PITTSFORD, New York., October 23, 2004 --Springfield College senior fullback Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) ran for a career-high 202 yards and a touchdown, but it was No. 24 St. John Fisher (N.Y.) College defeating the fourth-ranked Pride, 45-24, this afternoon in Empire 8 Football Conference action.
Two SC first-quarter turnovers led to a pair of St. John Fisher touchdowns as the Cardinals (7-1, 3-1 E-8) jumped out to a 14-3 lead with 13:04 remaining in the second quarter. The Pride (5-1, 2-1 E-8) answered with an eight-play, 90-yard drive, capped by a two-yard Lutgens score, to cut the Cardinal lead to 14-10 with 9:28 remaining in the second quarter.
After forcing a Cardinal punt, the Pride took over on its own 22-yard line and drove to the Fisher 34, when senior quarterback Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) threw an interception with 4:17 remaining. Fisher capitalized, driving seven plays and scoring a touchdown with :44 seconds remaining to take a 21-10 lead at halftime.
On the first play of the second half, Mitch Dupuis (Merrimack, N.H.) recovered a Fisher fumble and returned it seven yards for a Pride touchdown, and the two-point conversion cut the lead to 21-18 with 14:44 remaining in the third quarter.
Three unanswered Fisher touchdowns broke the game open, however, and the Cardinals opened a 42-18 lead with 11:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sylvia's 44th-career touchdown tied a school record, and made the score 42-24 with 5:25 remaining in the game.
SC was held to a season-low 276 yards rushing and 347 yards of total offense. St. John Fisher halfback Mark Robinson rushed 41 times for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cardinal attack.
