Football Defeats Coast Guard, 64-14
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept, 28, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore quarterback Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) threw two first-quarter touchdown passes as the Pride cruised past Coast Guard, 64-14, in a Freedom Football Conference (FFC) game at Benedum Field.
The Pride improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. SC, which entered the game as Division III’s top rushing team (437.0 ypg), scored three defensive touchdowns and threw three touchdown passes. This is the second time that the Pride scored over 60 points in three games this season. SC downed Salve Regina, 69-0, in the season opener on Sept. 6. The Bears fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
In the first quarter, Judge hit senior halfback Dustin Grosso (Glen Cove, N.Y.) with a 21-yard scoring strike at 8:07, then connected with senior split end Jay Curtis (Princeton, N.J.) on a 14-yard TD pass at 2:35 to give the Pride a 12-0 lead. Just 55 seconds later, senior cornerback Mike Capotosto (W. Greenwich, R.I.) picked off a Matt Gully pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to make the score 19-0 with 1:40 left in the quarter. On the Bears’ next play, sophomore strong safety Joe Pedemonti (Manchester, Conn.) intercepted a Gully pass and raced 46 yards for a score to put the Pride in command, 26-0.
In the second quarter, SC back-up quarterback Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) tossed a 43-yard TD pass to senior tight end Jeff Barry (Concord, N.H.) to extend the advantage to 33-0 with 11:44 remaining in the half. Just under four minutes later, Sylvia scored on an 11-yard run and SC led, 40-0, with 6:54 left.
Springfield College senior defensive end Jim Galliher (Dalton, Mass.) recovered a fumble and ran 44 yards to the end zone at 13:23 of the fourth quarter to give the Pride a 54-7 lead.
The Pride travel to No. 11 Ithaca (N.Y.) for a non-conference game on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
