Men's Basketball Nipped By Hampden-Sydney, 73-70

SALEM, Va., November 20, 2005 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led all scorers in the game with 19 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team in this weekend's V-Foundation Classic hosted by Roanoke College, but it was the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College which upended the Pride, 73-70, this afternoon (Nov. 20).

Yvon compiled a weekend total of 50 points in just two games in Salem, Virginia, over the past two days, pouring in 31 in SC's season-opener against Roanoke, to go along with another team-best 19 this afternoon against the Tigers.

Yvon led four SC athletes in double figures against Hampden-Sydney, as sophomore guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) scored 14 points off the bench, junior Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and senior forward Mike DeCesar (Acton, Mass.) added 10 points and six boards.

The first half of play went back-and-forth as neither team held a lead of more than four points at any time; the two squads went into the locker room all square at 30 apiece. The Pride made 11-of-25 field goals in the opening stanza (44%), led by DeCesar with eight first-half points. After a three-pointer from Hampden-Sydney's Mike Edwards with 14:47 left in the game, making the score 42-38 in favor of the Tigers, SC responded, going on a 16-4 run to build an eight-point lead with 9:08 left in the contest capped by a Yvon jumper.

SC held onto its lead until the 4:27-minute mark, when Hampden-Sydney's Matt Guill converted a layup to even the score at 60-60. Then, with 3:16 left in the game, the Tigers' Matt Green made a three-point field goal to put Hampden-Sydney up for good, 63-60. In the last seven minutes of play, the Tigers nailed five three-pointers, including four from Matt Green. In the game, Hampden-Sydney went 8-for-19 from three-point land (42.1%) to defeat the Pride.

SC falls to 0-2 on the young season, losing both of its V-Foundation Classic match-ups by just a total of five points. The Pride will return to Springfield, Mass., for its home-opener on Tuesday evening, November 22, for a 7:00 p.m. game against Tufts University.
