SPRINGFIELD, Mass., – January 2, 2006 – Led by Ross Burt’s 20 points, the Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas men’s basketball team defeated Colby-Sawyer College of New London, N.H., 74-58, in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Men’s Basketball Classic at Springfield College’s Blake Arena this afternoon.
With the win, Trinity (TX) raised its record to 8-3, while Colby-Sawyer fell to 4-5.
A 6-6 senior guard from Dallas, Texas and Dallas Jesuit HS, Burt recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Tigers were senior forward Andy Bates (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) with 16 points (and 8 rebounds, plus 6 assists), as well as senior guard James Lake (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS) with 12 points (and 7 rebounds).
The star performer for Colby-Sawyer was senior center Andrew St. Clair (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) with game-highs of 29 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Pat Kenney (Wethersfield, Conn./East Catholic HS) was Colby-Sawyer’s next high scorer with 7 points. Senior forward James Thorpe (Concord, N.H./Concord/NHTI) chipped in with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Collin Bray (Brookline, Mass./New Hampton Prep) had 6 assists.
While St. Clair shot well (10-of-16), no one else on the Chargers’ squad was able to help in that category. As a team, Colby-Sawyer shot .338 from the floor (22-of-65). Colby-Sawyer was just 3-of-20 from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, Trinity (TX) shot much better as a team from the field at .431 (28-of-65). The Tigers also outrebounded their opponents, 48-38, and made 10-of-30 3-point attempts. Trinity also assisted on 18 of 28 field goals made.
Trinity (TX) never trailed in this game, although there were two ties early at 2-all and 7-all. A James Lake lay-up then put Trinity into the lead for good at 9-7 with 17:22 left in the first half. Ahead by 2 at 16-14, Trinity then went on an 11-0 run, culminated by a jumper by Bates with 7:21 remaining in the half. The Tigers led, 39-26, at the half.
St. Clair did his best to get Colby-Sawyer back into the game in the second half. He scored 18 of his 29 in that stanza. A free throw by Pat Kenny with 13:40 left actually closed the gap to 6 at 47-41, and it was still an 8-point game (53-45) with just under 10 minutes to go.
But Trinity began to turn it on, gradually building its margin. With 1:45 left, Trinity had its largest lead, 74-55, following a lay-up by junior center Mike Gilb (Mansfield, Texas/Nolan Catholic HS). A 3-pointer by Colby-Sawyer’s freshman guard Pat McKinnon (Goffstown, N.H./Bishop Brady HS) closed the scoring with 23 seconds remaining.
Named to the All-Tourney team from these two squads were Trinity’s Ross Burt and Colby-Sawyer’s Andrew St. Clair.
