Men's Basketball Edged By Roanoke, 71-69, In Season Opener
SALEM, Va., November 19, 2005 - Springfield College senior Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led all scorers with 31 points, but it was the Roanoke College Maroons which edged the Pride, 71-69, in the opening night of the V-Foundation Classic, hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
Yvon had a very solid night for SC (0-1) despite the loss, pouring in 31 on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor, making all six of his free throw attempts, while adding three assists and two blocks. Senior forward Mike DeCesar (Acton, Mass.) was the only other SC player in double figures, scoring 18 points and grabbing six rebounds to go along with four assists.
Leading by one late in the first half (24-23), Roanoke (1-0) closed out the opening stanza on a 12-0 run to take a 13-point lead, 36-23, into the locker room. With the Maroons up by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Pride started to mount its comeback. SC stormed back to take a 66-65 lead with 3:40 left in the game on a Yvon three-pointer.
The two teams battled back and forth for the next three minutes, and with the Pride down three points with just two seconds remaining on the clock, junior point guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) purposeley missed the second of two free throws after Pizzo made the first free throw attempt to make the score 71-69. SC rebounded Pizzo's missed shot, but was unable to convert at the last second as Roanoke held on for the victory in both school's season-openers.
The Pride will next face the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College Sunday afternoon (Nov. 20) in the second day of the V-Foundation Classic in a 1:00 p.m. start.
