

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., – January 1, 2006 – Holding Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas scoreless over the last 5:51, the Bates College men’s basketball team of Lewiston, Maine defeated Trinity (TX), 63-57, in a first round game of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Men’s Basketball Classic at Springfield College’s Blake Arena this evening.
With the win, Bates raises its record to 7-2, while Trinity (TX) falls to 7-3. Bates has now won 4 straight, while the loss halts a 2-game Trinity win streak. Bates will take on the winner of tonight’s second game – host Springfield versus Colby-Sawyer of New London, N.H. – tomorrow (Jan. 2) at 7:30 pm in the tourney’s championship contest. Trinity (TX) will take on the loser of tonight’s game tomorrow at 3 pm in the consolation.
Trinity (TX) led 57-52 with 5:51 remaining when 6-3 senior guard James Lake (Houston, Tex./Memorial HS) made the first of two free throws for the Tigers. But Bates College was destined to score the last 11 points of the game.
The comeback began when 5-11 junior guard Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine/Bangor HS) made a lay-up with 4:33 left. Ray made another lay-up with 3:47 to go, cutting the margin to 1 at 57-56. Then with 2:24 left, 6-5 junior forward Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H./New Hampton School) hit a jumper, putting the Bobcats into the lead for good. It was also Bates’ first lead of the game.
Stockwell then hit another jumper with 1:49 to play and was fouled on the play, although he missed the free throw. For Trinity, 6-2 junior guard Brandon York (San Antonio, Tex./Reagan HS) would have two opportunities to tie it with 3-pointers, the second with 31 seconds left. Following York’s second try, Trinity was forced to foul the rest of the way. Bates’ 6-6 senior center Matt Chudomel (Wellfleet, Mass./Nauset HS) made two free throws with 29 seconds left to lift the margin to 5 (62-57). Following a turnover, Ray made one more free throw with 17 seconds left.
Trinity led 35-27 at the half. The Tigers’ largest lead came with 2:28 in the first half (at 33-22) when 6-3 sophomore guard Barrett Koch (Dallas, Tex./Dallas Jesuit HS) made a lay-up. Trinity shot .556 in that half (15-of-27), while Bates had shot .321 (9-of-28). In the second half, Trinity’s largest lead was 10 at 46-36 with exactly 15 minutes to go. But a 6-point run by Bates over the next 1:52 made big inroads, making it a game again.
For Bates, the leading scorer was Stockwell with a game-high 24 points. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Ray added 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. No one else scored more than 6 points for the Bobcats.
For Trinity (TX), 6-6 senior guard Ross Burt (Houston, Tex./Cypress Falls HS) led the Tigers with 17 points. Behind Burt was 6-6 senior forward Andy Bates (Austin, Tex./St. Stephen’s Academy) with 13 points. Bates and Burt both led Trinity with 6 rebounds apiece.
Overall, Bates shot just .368 from the floor (21-of-57), while Trinity (TX) shot .426 (23-of-54). Neither team shot particularly well from 3-point range. Bates was 6-of-22 (.273), while Trinity was 4-of-24 (.167). Trinity was frustrated in the second half, going 0-for-15 from beyond the arc. Bates outrebounded Trinity, 42-33.
Charlie Brock in 2009-10 will enter his 12th season as the head coach at Springfield College. Brock’s achievements as a coach are certainly impressive, as he has taken three schools to the NCAA Division III Tournament and has an overall, 29-year record of 394-363 for a winning percentage of .520.
