Men's Basketball Falls In OT Heartbreaker at Williams, 88-87

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., December 10, 2005 - Springfield College senior Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a team-best 25 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field, but it was Williams College which stunned the Pride in overtime, 88-87, on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 10) in Williamstown, Mass.

With five seconds left in overtime, Yvon scored on a jumper to break a 85-85 tie, putting SC up by two. Williams College came right down the court, however, and just as time expired, Brendan Hanifin netted a three to give the Ephs the victory, 88-87. Williams' Chris Shalvoy led all scorers with 27 points on 7-of-12 shooting from three-point land.

After SC built a 41-33 lead at the break, Williams came back in the second stanza, outscoring the Pride, 40-32, to force the extra session. With 56 seconds left in regulation, Williams' Chris Rose made a three to put the Ephs up, 73-70. Rose scored 21 in the game for Williams on seven three-pointers.

SC senior forward Mike DeCesar (Acton, Mass.) pulled the Pride to within one, at 73-72, with 36 seconds left. After getting fouled, Chris Shalvoy missed the front end of a one-and-one to keep the game within reach for SC. Junior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) then got fouled on the next posession by Chris Rose, and after missing the first free throw, Farley hit the second to force overtime.

Senior forward Joel Aponte (Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) each added 13 off the bench for SC. DeCesar netted 11 points, and Farley chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds. With the loss, SC falls to 1-7 overall on the season and will next host Connecticut College on Wednesday night, December 14, at 7:00 p.m.
