

NEW LONDON, Conn., January 7, 2006 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a team-high 16 points to go along with five steals, but it was the Coast Guard Academy Bears which upended the Pride in New London, Conn., on Saturday afternoon, January 7, in SC's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener, 76-62.
After the Pride held a 10-point advantage going into the break, at 41-31, Coast Guard responded, outscoring SC by a 45-21 margin to take the conference match-up by 14 points. The Bears were led by sophomore forward Jeff Prebeck with a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Prebeck finished 11-of-17 from the floor on the afternoon, connecting on all five of his three-point attempts, as the sophomore also chipped in with four assists and two steals.
Two other Bears finished with double-doubles in the game, in sophomore forwards Craig Johnson (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Steve Blum (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Pride junior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, as senior forward Brian Riley (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore forward Gregg Daly (Farmington, Conn.) each added 11 points apiece.
SC falls to 4-9 overall on the season and 0-1 in NEWMAC play. Coast Guard improves to 7-2 and 1-1 in the conference. The Pride will next travel to Wheaton College on Tuesday evening, January 10, for a 7:30 p.m. conference tilt.
Charlie Brock in 2009-10 will enter his 12th season as the head coach at Springfield College. Brock’s achievements as a coach are certainly impressive, as he has taken three schools to the NCAA Division III Tournament and has an overall, 29-year record of 394-363 for a winning percentage of .520.
