NORTON, Mass., February 21, 2006 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a team-high 25 points to lead three Pride players in double figures, but it was Wheaton College which proved to be too much for SC, 82-78, on Tuesday evening in the first round of the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Tournament.
The two teams battled evenly throughout most of the first half, but after a lay-up from junior guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) that made the score 26-25 in favor of the Lyons with 5:17 to go, Wheaton went on a 15-8 run to close the half up eight points, at 41-33. Yvon paced the Pride in the opening stanza to lead all scorers with 11 points. Wheaton's Brian Zukowski and Brent DiGiovanna added 10 apiece for the Lyons in the first 20 minutes.
SC (10-16) opened the second half on a 21-9 run capped off by a three-point field goal from Yvon that gave the Pride a 54-50 advantage with just 10:42 left in the contest. That game was neck-and-neck the rest of the way, as the score was tied six different times in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The last tie of the game came at the 3:36 mark after a lay-up from Yvon to make the score 67-67. In the end, however, Wheaton was too much, as the Lyons went on a 15-11 run to close the game out and advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals.
Besides Yvon's 25, senior forward Brian Riley (Worcester, Mass.) added 15 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks in the losing effort. Junior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) scored 10 points and lead all rebounders with nine in the game. Wheaton's Brian Zukowski lead all scorers with 29 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 shooting from deep. Zukowski also made all nine of his free throws attempted.
Derek Yvon, the all-time leading scorer in Springfield College men's basketball history, has finished his career with an impressive 2,101 points, averaging an even 23.0 points per game this season, as the co-captain scored 597 points throughout his senior campaign.
