Women's Soccer Blanks WNEC, 4-0, In Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 4, 2003 – Springfield College junior forward Jessica Kovacs (Dalton, Mass.) scored two goals as the Pride topped Western New England College, 4-0, in its season-opener at Brock-Affleck Field this afternoon.

SC senior midfielder Laura Harwood (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Michelle Biogiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.) added goals for the Pride (1-0). Sophomore keeper Christina Davis made two saves en route to the shutout.

For the Golden Bears (0-2), freshman keeper Jackie Boychuk made 10 saves.

Biogiovanni put the Pride in front, 1-0, in the 45th minute with her first collegiate goal. Kovacs scored the first of her two goals in the 72nd minute. She added her second tally four minutes later off a feed from senior Colleen McGovern (Smithfield, R.I.). Harwood capped the scoring in the 79th minute when she converted a pass from freshman Allison Barendse (Utica, N.Y.).
