Wheaton Tops Women's Soccer For NEWMAC Title
NORTON, Mass., Nov. 9, 2003 - Wheaton College captured its fourth consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Title on Sunday afternoon, as the top-seeded Lyons defeated the third-seeded Springfield College, 6-0, at Mirrione Stadium.
The Pride, which was making its second trip to the NEWMAC Tournament championship match in the last three years, falls to 10-9-2. Wheaton (21-1) is going back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
Wheaton senior forward Tracy Prihoda opened the scoring in the 10th minute, taking a pass from junior Erin Brennan and rifling her shot towards the bottom left corner of the net. SC goalkeeper Christina Davis (Orange, Conn.) partially blocked the shot, but the ball managed to trickle across the goal line for the 1-0 edge. Just under two minutes later, Brennan found senior Christy McHugh for a 2-0 advantage. Later in the half, the Lyons scored three goals over a 5:26 span to make it 5-0.
Davis finished with five stops for the Pride.
