Women’s Soccer Falls To Smith College, 3-2, In Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 29, 2002 – Smith College senior midfielder Claire Williams (Portland, Ore.) scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to push the Pioneers past Springfield College, 3-2, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game this afternoon on Senior Day at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield College senior Amanda Conk (Monclair, N.J.) scored the first goal for the Pride in the 62nd minute. Fellow senior Bonnie Roberts (Belchertown, Mass.) added a goal off a free kick in the 84th minute to give the Pride a brief 2-1 advantage.

Smith senior midfielder Hannah Wenzel (Groose Pt. Park, Mich.) netted the game-tying goal in the 89th minute off of another free kick. The Pioneers’ first goal came as a result of a Springfield College own goal.

The Pride fall to 8-9 (5-4 NEWMAC) and the Pioneers improve to 11-6 (5-4 NEWMAC). Both teams begin NEWMAC Tournament play this Saturday.
