Williams College Too Much for Baseball, 11-4
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 24, 2006 – Springfield College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the two innings, but it was Williams College who came out victorious, 11-4, this afternoon in non-conference action on Berry-Allen Field.
SC used RBI hits by senior first baseman Adam Taquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) and junior outfielder Chris Stack (Loudonville, N.Y.) to take a two-run advantage into the third inning.
The Ephs took advantage of early Pride errors to score a combined seven unearned runs between the third and fourth innings, taking a 7-2 lead.
Key third-inning RBI hits for the Ephs included a double by sophomore outfielder Max Pinto (Palo Alto, Calif.), who went 3-for-6 on the day, and sophomore shortstop Paul Morgan (Essex Junction, Vt.), who went 2-for-5.
After Williams’ leadoff man in the fourth inning, Taylor Mikell (Williston, Vt.), got on base via an error, SC senior hurler Robert Smaldone (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) answered back by striking out the next batter and then forcing a groundout. But with two outs, the Ephs rallied for four hits, including a two-run home run by junior first baseman Sean Gleeson (Glen Ridge, N.J.), en-route to the 11-4 victory.
For the Pride, senior third baseman Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Williams starting pitcher Mike Disner (West Bloomfield, Mich.) improved his record to 2-1 by pitching six innings, while allowing just two runs and striking out four. Smalldone fell to 1-4 on the season, allowing seven runs over four innings, but all seven were unearned.
The second-seeded Pride will be hosting seventh-seeded Clark University this Thursday afternoon, April 27th, at 3:30 p.m. in the First Round of the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament.
