

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 6, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore first baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Pride defeated Elms College, 15-2, in a non-conference contest this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
SC controlled the game from the start. After senior right-hander Robert Smaldone (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) struck out the side in the top of the first, the Pride scored five runs its opening stanza. SC took advantage of early Blazer errors and received RBI hits from Hingston, senior Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Chris Stack (Loudonville, N.Y.), and sophomore Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.).
Other key contributors for the Pride included junior Jeff Hewes (Groton, Conn.), as the catcher went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and senior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Pride improved to .500 on the season, at 9-9 overall, while Elms College fell to 3-14. Smaldone is now 1-1 in his senior campaign as Blazer freshman hurler, Joe Esile, lost his fourth-straight decision (0-4).
SC will host Williams College tomorrow (Apr. 7) at 3:30 p.m. and then return to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday, April 8th, with a home doubleheader against Clark University beginning at noon.
