

WESTFIELD, Mass., April 3, 2006 – A 21-hit onslaught powered Springfield College to a 17-3 victory over Westfield State College in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Pride snapped its five-game losing streak in improving to 8-9 overall on the season, as Westfield State falls to 9-9 overall.
SC sophomore first baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) had two big hits and four RBI for the Pride. He snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the third inning. Hingston then hammered a two-run homer in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-2.
SC then tacked on four more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Pride leadoff batter Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Senior second baseman Steve Hunt (West Hartford, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior Jess Hewes (Groton, Conn.), and seniors Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) and Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) all pounded a double and single for SC.
The Pride received a solid pitching performance from Carl Longo (Manchester, N.H.). The senior righthander survived a shaky first inning; he threw seven innings in all, allowing four hits, three runs and five walks while striking out five to earn his first victory of the season (1-1).
Westfield sophomore Russ Lloyd was the starting and losing pitcher for the Owls, falling to 0-2 on the season. No player had more than one hit in Westfield State’s six-hit attack. Senior first baseman Pat Jaehnig rapped a two-run single in the first inning to give the Owls an early, 2-1 lead after one.
SC will next host Williams College in yet another non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon, April 5, in a 4:00 p.m. start at Berry-Allen Field.
