Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader Against Clark University
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 8, 2006 -- Senior Matt Rodovick (Stamford, Vt.) allowed just 1 unearned run in 7 innings, to lead Springfield College to a 3-1 victory over Clark University in game #2 of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference doubleheader this afternoon at SC’s Berry-Allen Field. In game #1, Clark rode a 4-run first-inning to a 5-3 victory.
With the split, Springfield is now 10-10 overall, and 3-3 in the NEWMAC. Clark is now 8-16 overall, and 1-6 in the conference. The Cougars picked up their first league victory in game #1.
In game #2, Clark took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior shortstop Kyle Breidenstine (Shoemakersville, Pa.) reached on an error, stole second, and then came around on a single by junior first baseman Nick Tapper (Hopkinton, Mass.). But that was all the Cougars were destined to get.
In the bottom of the third, SC came back as senior third baseman Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led off with a double down the left field line. He later scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, sophomore first baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) walked with one out. He moved around on a perfect hit-and-run single by senior centerfielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) and then scored on an error by the Clark third baseman. That proved to be the winning run.
Springfield nudged over an insurance run in the seventh on a single, an error, and three walks. Senior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mas.) singled with one out, but was immediately caught stealing. Doug Maier (Long Valley, N.J.) then reached on an error by the centerfielder. Three walks followed, including the final one to Hingston on a 3-2 pitch.
Rodovick (3-2) took credit for the win. He allowed 4 hits and 1 run (unearned), while striking out 6 and walking no one. Senior righthander Jon Davis (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up his fourth save of the season, striking out three and allowing only one runner to reach base in the final two innings.
For Clark, senior righthander David Hanley (Medford, Mass.) was the tough-luck loser. In seven innings, he gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 5. Hanley is now 0-3.
In game #1, the Cougars struck quickly by pounding out 5 hits and scoring 4 in the first inning. Junior leftfielder Robert Muollo (Quincy, Mass.) led off with a long double to right. He was immediately singled home by Breidenstine. Following a walk, sophomore catcher Joe Silva (Westbury, N.Y.) knocked in two with a long double to left. Sophomore second baseman Eric Dufour (Exeter, N.H.) then singled home another. It could have been worse for the Pride when Clark sophomore rightfielder singled to left, but Dufour was thrown out at third on a very close play by SC junior leftfielder Chris Stack (Loudonville, N.Y.).
Springfield cut the margin to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning by taking advantage of 3 hits, a walk, and an error. Hingston singled in one run in that frame.
Clark, however, scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Dufour reached on an error with one out. Osburn then doubled him home to take a 5-2 lead.
SC closed out the scoring in the last of the sixth inning. Senior second baseman Steve Hunt (West Hartford, Conn.) singled. He later scored on a double by senior catcher Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.). With runners on second and third with two out, Clark freshman righthander Matt Tillo (Lancaster, Mass.) then came up big by inducing a flyball out to leftfield to end the threat.
Tillo went the 7-inning distance, allowing 10 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). He walked 3 and struck out 3 in evening his record to 2-2. For Springfield, junior righthander Derek Hodder (Hamden, Conn.) took the loss. He is now 3-2.
Springfield next plays at home Monday (April 10) against MCLA at 3:30 pm.
