Baseball Beats Babson, 10-6, Behind Two Rex Cone Homers
BABSON PARK, Mass., April 15, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore right-fielder Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two three-run home runs and seven total runs batted in (RBI) as the Pride defeated Babson College, 10-6, in the first game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader this afternoon at Govoni Field.
In game two, Babson College junior Billy Schmitt drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to help Babson College gain a 6-5 win and a split against the visiting Pride.
Babson (13-13, 4-4 NEWMAC) took a 4-3 lead halfway through game two, thanks to a solo homer by sophomore Andrew Nodine in the third and a two-run shot by senior co-captain Teddy Dziuba in the sixth. Nodine’s home run was the first of his collegiate career, while Dziuba’s was his team-leading seventh of the season.
SC (12-13, 5-4 NEWMAC) tied the game in the top of the eighth, sparking a wild final two innings. Senior Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) singled in a run to even the score at 5-5, and sophomore Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Conn.) followed with a base hit that loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Babson sophomore hurler Sam Whelan pitched out of the jam by inducing two shallow fly balls and a pop-up to third.
The Beavers regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth when junior Ryan Campbell drove in sophomore Matt Delaney with a sacrifice fly, but the Pride once again tied things up when senior Steve Hunt (West Hartford, Conn.) scored on a two-out error in the top of the ninth. Babson finally secured the win in the bottom of the inning, as Schmitt dumped a bases-loaded single down the left field line to score sophomore pinch-runner Jay Verrill from third.
Whelan (2-0) picked up the win in relief, while junior Derek Hodder (Hamden, Conn.) took the loss (3-3) despite allowing no earned runs in two innings. Nodine went 3-for-3 with a homer in his first start of the year for Babson, while Hunt and senior Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each had three hits for SC.
Babson took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, as first-year Jeff Wojnar smacked a three-run double to right center. However, the Pride came back with six runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a three-run homer to right by Cone and a two-run blast to left by Hunt. The Beavers got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, but Cone drove in one with a single in the third and three more with his second homer of the day in the fifth to secure the 10-6 victory.
Cone went 3-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBIs to lead the Springfield offense, while first-year Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, Mass.) earned the win (2-1) with three innings of scoreless relief. Delaney went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Beavers.
