Baseball Defeats UMass Dartmouth, 7-5, Behind Three-Run Seventh Inning
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 26, 2006 – Springfield College senior pitcher Carl Longo (Manchester, N.H.) tossed five shutout innings and struck out four as the Pride defeated UMass Dartmouth this afternoon, 7-5, at Berry-Allen Field.
SC improved to 7-4 by winning its third game in a row, while the Corsairs fell to 2-5 on the season.
For the second day in a row, the Pride took advantage of first-inning errors. Senior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored his team-leading 11th run of the season off an infield error by UMass Dartmouth to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead. An RBI double by senior third basemen Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow) sparked a two-run third inning as SC increased their lead to 3-0.
The Corsairs used three-hits, including an RBI double by junior designated hitter Rob Lomuscio to get back in the game, tying up the score at three apiece in the top of the sixth inning.
A three-run seventh inning by the Pride, sparked by an RBI double from sophomore Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) sealed the victory for the Pride as senior reliever Jon Davis (Ludlow, Mass.) came in, got the Pride out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, and picked up his third save of the season.
Freshman lefty Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, Mass.) pitched an inning and two-thirds of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two to pick up his first career collegiate victory.
SC will next travel to Trinity College for yet another non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, in a 3:00 p.m. start.
