Boxscore
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 21, 2005 - Springfield College senior All-American
Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) totaled 22 kills on 38 swings for a .474 hitting percentage to lead the third-ranked Pride to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-26) sweep of sixth-ranked Rivier (N.H.) College in its men’s volleyball home opener this evening in Blake Arena.
Sophomore setter
Robert Soris (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was credited with 43 assists while senior swing hitter
Matt Smith (Midlothian, Va.) added nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage for the Pride (1-2).
Junior middle blocker
Andrew Chace tallied a team-high 11 kills and a .529 attack percentage to lead the Raiders (2-3) in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Pride took control of game one thanks to an 8-3 run sparked by two kills from freshman outside hitter
Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.) and five Raider errors that put the Pride up, 17-10. Rivier fought back to within five at 25-20, but a pair of service aces from Smith and two of Mueller’s seven kills in the game sealed the opening victory for SC.
Mueller would again lead the Pride with nine kills in game two, but the Raiders kept the game close, never trailing by more than three. With the SC leading, 24-21, a Mueller kill followed by five-straight Pride points with Smith serving, pushed Springfield to the game-two victory.
Despite SC jumping out to an 8-4 lead in game three, Rivier would fight back to take a two-point advantage at 26-24, including four kills by Chace during the run. After a Raider service error, the Pride scored the next five points of the game as Albano recorded three service aces and Palumbo was credited with a pair of kills to cap off the victory.
SC, which played the first of nine-straight home matches, returns to action tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. versus Division I St. Francis (Pa.).
