No. 16 Wrestling Downs Ithaca, Falls To TCNJ At Budd Whitehill Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., (January 13, 2006) – Phil McGeough won a major decision to lead the #16-ranked Springfield College wrestling team to a 21-18 come-from-behind victory over #24-ranked Ithaca College earlier today at the Budd Whitehill National Dual Tourney at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

A junior heavyweight from Clifton Park, NY, McGeough defeated Jake Mender, 11-2, to register a 4-point major decision, giving the Pride the 3-point win. With the victory, Springfield is now 3-2, while Ithaca falls to 2-3.

Both Springfield and Ithaca won five bouts apiece in this match. Other Springfield winners included senior Derek McNerney (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin HS) at 125 pounds, senior Peter Marques (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa HS) at 133 pounds, junior Michael Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan HS) at 141 pounds, and junior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) at 149 pounds.

SC built a 17-0 lead through the first four bouts, but then proceeded to lose five straight to fall behind, 18-17. It was up to McGeough, a product of Shenendehowa High School, to pull it out for the Pride.

Michael Gaeta and Mark DeCiccio won decisions for Springfield College, but it was far from enough as the #6-ranked College of New Jersey wrestling team defeated #16-ranked Springfield, 29-7, earlier today at the Budd Whitehill National Dual Tourney at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

When junior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston HS) won his match over John Biango, 6-3, at 149 pounds, Springfield had closed the team margin to one point at 7-6 after four bouts. SC junior Michael Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan HS), ranked #3 in the nation as an individual, had just beaten Bill Tenpenney, 14-3, in a 4-point decision.

But The College of New Jersey proved to be victorious in the other 8 matches.

With the win, TCNJ is now 2-1. With the loss, Springfield is now 3-3.

The Budd Whitehill Duals, with 20 teams involved, will continue throughout the day tomorrow (Sat., Jan. 14).
