Springfield, Mass. - March 4, 2009 - Senior Chris Brown will head to Iowa this week as he represents Springfield College in the 2009 Division III Wrestling Championships. Brown will be one of 15 wrestlers from across the country to compete at the 285 pound weight class. Competition will begin at 11:00 am on Friday morning in the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Brown earned an entry into the 36th annual event by virtue of earning a wild card spot after finishing second in the New England Wrestling Association Championships. In his first match, Brown will take on fifth-seeded Mark Corsello from Elmhurst. Corsello enters the competition with a 27-7 record, compared to Brown's overall record of 38-11. Entering the competition, Brown has notched the most wins this season out of the 15-competitor field.
If he were to win his first round bout, Brown would take on the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Glenn Geesman of MIT and Adam Sutter of Lakeland. Geesman won the NEWA Championships at the 285 weight class and owns a 37-2 record on the year. Of Geesman’s two losses this season, one came just two weekends ago at the hands of Brown during the NEWA Championships. Sutter on the other hand has a 29-7 record this season.
Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 20th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2009-10.
