Basketball Heads To WPI For NEWMAC Tournament Semifinals On Saturday

Men's and Women's Basketball Travel To WPI For NEWMAC Semi's Springfield, Mass. - February 26, 2009 - After winning their quarterfinal games on Wednesday evening, both the Springfield College men's and women's basketball teams will be traveling on Saturday to WPI for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Semifinals.

The women's team, which is the the No. 3 seed, will take on No. 2 Babson at 2:00 pm. The women's team used 14 points from Corey Finch to defeat Wellesley, 69-55, on Wednesday night in Blake Arena. The Pride will take on Babson, which was was a 59-35 victor over #7-seed Coast Guard on Wednesday. In fact, all four of the top four seeds won their quarterfinal matches, as #1-seed WPI downed #8-seed Mount Holyoke, 52-42, and #4-seed Wheaton defeated #5-seed Clark, 73-62. The NEWMAC Tourney semifinal games will be played at WPI's Harrington Auditorium Saturday at 12 noon and at 2 pm.

On the men's side, the Springfield College men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to take down visiting Clark, 85-66, in the NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Wednesday. The 4th-seeded Pride will take on top-seeded WPI on Saturday at 4:30 pm. Leading the way for the Pride was Pat Crean, who continued his sensational play of late as he pumped in a game-high 24 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and three assists. In the other semifinal matchup, No. 2 MIT needed overtime to advance to the next round and will take on No. 6 Babson, which upset Wheaton in another quarterfinal.

Admission to the events will be $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors, $1.00 for students, and children under 12 free.
