Thus, Springfield, ranked 6th in the latest New England Wrestling Association Division III poll, drops to 7-9 on the season, while TCNJ raises its record to 17-3. The Pride will have to wait at least one more match to become the fourth collegiate program ever to win 900 matches.
TCNJ got off to a great start with two wins by freshman Dan Hughes at 125 pounds and senior Ray Sarinelli, at 133, putting the Pride down early, 8-0. But Springfield rebounded with two tough wins in back and forth matches by seniors Jamie Sgaglione (No. Massapequa, N.Y.) at 141 pounds, and Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) at 149 to cut the lead to 8-6.
TCNJ wound up winning the next four matches. Included was a hard-fought win by junior Al Wonesh at 165 over SC senior Jake Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.), 3-1 in overtime.
Springfield closed the gap as it won the last two matches with great efforts from sophomore John Ragno (Enfield, Conn.) and junior Chris Brown (East Hartford, Conn.).
Next up, Springfield is on the road Saturday (Feb. 9) when it travels to Trinity.
