

Springfield, Mass. -- January 27, 2009 -- Arizona Cardinals' Special Teams Coach Kevin Spencer, an 18-year veteran coach of the National Football League, will be this year's representative from Springfield College at the Super Bowl. It marks the third straight year that Springfield College will be represented by at least one coach on the staff of a team playing in the Super Bowl.Spencer is a 1975 graduate of Springfield College, where he majored in physical education. He played football and lacrosse at Springfield College from 1972 through 1975. He then went on to earn a master's degree from SUNY-Cortland in 1976.
In last year's Super Bowl XLII, Springfield College was represented by Steve Spagnuolo '82, then defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and very recently named the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, as well as Mike Woicik G'80, head strength coach of the New England Patriots. Also represented was David Gettleman '72, Director of Pro Personnel for the New York Giants.
In 2007, Springfield College was represented by three alums on the sidelines in Super Bowl XLI. They included the Chicago Bears head strength and conditioning coach Rusty Jones ’76, G’86; his assistant coach Jim Arthur ’00, G’02; and Indianapolis Colts head strength and conditioning coach Jon Torine ’95.
Spencer is about to complete his second year as special teams coach with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals hired him in that capacity as of January 19, 2007. Previously, Spencer had been with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ironically the team the Cardinals will face in Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa this Sunday, for five seasons (2002-2006). In 2003, Kevin was selected the NFL's "Special Teams Coach of the Year" by the league's special teams coaches.
Prior to his stint with the Steelers, Spencer had been with the Indianapolis Colts, again as special teams coach from 1998 to 2001. Prior to that, Spencer had been with the Oakland Raiders for three seasons (1995-97). And before that, he had been with the Cleveland Browns (1991-94).
A native of Queens, N.Y., Spencer also coached on the collegiate level. His major stint was as the head football coach at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. from 1987 to 1991. Spencer coached current Cleveland Browns head football coach Eric Mangini for two years (1989-90) during that time.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 28th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2009. He enters his 26th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 25 years (1984 through 2008, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater.
