Football's Dewey Is A First-Team All-American
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 20, 2004 – Springfield College senior Brian Dewey has been voted to the 2004 Football Gazette Division III All-America First-Team, announced today.
Dewey, who earns All-America honors for the second-straight season, is only the second SC football player to be recognized as an All-American twice. Jack Quinn was a two-time All-American is 1978 and 1979.
This is the fourth time in five seasons that an SC offensive lineman has gained All-America status. Dewey joins Matt Sallila (2nd team, 2000) and Andrew MacFadyen (3rd team, 2002) in this distinction.
Dewey, a right tackle from Victory Mills, N.Y., earned Football Gazette All-East Region, New England Football Writers’ Division II-III All-Star and Empire 8 First-Team All-Conference accolades this season. Prior to the 2004 campaign, he was a consensus preseason first-team All-American. In ’03, he earned D3Football.com First-Team All-America and Football Gazette Third-Team All-America accolades. He also picked up Football Gazette First-Team All-East Region, ECAC Division III Northeast First-Team All-Star, New England Football Writers’ Division II-III All-Star and all-conference first-team honors last season. Dewey joined senior teammates Tim Lugtensand Brian McLellan on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northeast All-Star First Team.
McLellan, a defensive tackle from Mansfield, Mass., was a Football Gazette Division III All-East Region Football Second-Team and first-team All-Empire 8 pick in ’04. One of the league’s best interior lineman, he was second on the Pride with 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and third with 50 tackles. McLellan, a three-year starter at SC, had 23.5 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks in his college career.
Lutgens, a fullback from Greenwich, N.Y., makes the ECAC all-star team for the second-straight season. In ’04, he has been honored as a second-team all-East region choice, an Empire 8 Football All-Conference First-Team selection, and a New England Football Writers’ Division II-III All Star. Prior to this season, Lutgens was voted to the D3Football.com Pre-season All-America Second Team and the Football Gazette Pre-Season All-America Third Team. Lutgens is the only back in school history to break the 1,000-yard barrier in consecutive seasons, rushing for a team-high 1,064 yards in ’04, and 1,307 yards last season.
