Social and cultural activities are available throughout the City of Springfield and the surrounding areas. The fourth-largest city in New England, with a population of approximately 150,000, Springfield offers the convenience of the city and the nearby quiet and beauty of the country.

Four of Springfield's finest cultural institutions—the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum, the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, and the Museum of Fine Art—surround a quaint and beautiful green, known as the Quadrangle, in the heart of downtown Springfield. Also located in the downtown area is Springfield Symphony Hall, offering concerts, shows, and musicals. The city is also the site of the Basketball Hall of Fame and Springfield Civic Center, home to the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons and host of the annual Tip-Off Classic, the official start of the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball season.

Nearby cities offer additional resources and opportunities. Holyoke is home to Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, which provides three floors of stores and restaurants, and to the Volleyball Hall of Fame. West Springfield is the host to one of New England's most popular annual events, "The Big E," featuring agricultural exhibits, free shows, and carnival rides and games. Six Flags New England, a theme park featuring games, shows, attractions, and more than 150 rides, is located in nearby Agawam. Within a forty-five-minute drive north is Northampton, with its wide array of trendy shops, coffee houses, health-food stores, art galleries, book stores, theater productions, night clubs, concerts, lectures, and restaurants. The nearby Berkshire Mountains offer hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities. Boston and New York can be reached by car in only two and three hours, respectively.
