It’s a big year for Camp Massasoit as we celebrate a notable milestone in our camp history—our 80th birthday! Since the beginning of the Springfield College Day Camp, now known as Camp Massasoit, we have grown by leaps and bounds.
A lot has changed in 80 years. The first camp session in 1934 was only supposed to be two weeks long. Word spread about a great opportunity for children in the summer, and the camp had to be extended for an additional two weeks. Today, we pack eight weeks full of fun and new experiences. Back then, the cost to attend camp was $3.50 per week and swim lessons were taught in the lake. Although these days we avoid swimming in the lake, we still strive to keep the cost of camp reasonable.
While many things have changed over the decades, one component has stood the test of time—the philosophy of Camp Massasoit. We have been and always will be a camp built on respect. The founders of Camp Massasoit envisioned an experiential-based camp, and today we continue to support this model through the program areas and creative minds of our staff, focusing on the education and development of each camper.
As we enter our 80th year, we are excited to announce our 80 for 80 challenge: 80 gifts of $80 or more to the Friends of East Campus to support the greatest needs of our programs. (Learn more about the challenge on the following pages.) Your participation in the challenge will help ensure that we can continue to offer programs like Camp Massasoit that have been so special to students, campers, and our community for all these years.
Let the summer fun begin.
