The Academic Success Center

Hickory Hall
We in the Academic Success Center realize that learning and becoming a capable student involves mastering a long list of academic skill sets. For example, reading well involves skills in decoding, phonemic awareness, fluency and comprehension to name a few. Effective writing includes capably organizing your ideas, confirming the parameters of the assignment have been met, structuring writing in a clear manner as well as a host of other skills. Being efficient and productive with work completion and studying is often referred to as time management, but in fact there are a whole multitude of skills in this area: among them, goal setting, prioritizing, scheduling, and estimating time. Deficits or challenges in any of these skill areas can make learning and succeeding as a student difficult. The goal of the Academic Success Center is to help Springfield College students pinpoint the skills they want to enhance and give them the tools and support to do so.
The creation of the Academic Success Center stands as a milestone of Springfield College’s commitment to its mission and the promotion of “academic excellence.” This confluence of student academic services, housed in the newly renovated Hickory Hall (formerly known as Bemis Hall), is a direct result of the recommendations made by the 2004 Learning Support Task Force. Its opening in the fall of 2007 marks a new phase to expand both the breadth and depth of the academic services that Springfield College offers its students.
The Academic Success Center begins with three core services areas: Writing Support Services, Math Support Services, and Learning Support Services. Each service has a linked webpage detailing the supports they provide.
