Letter from the Chair
A letter from the Chair to prospective students:
Welcome to the website of the Springfield College English major. The English program, which is housed in the Humanities Department, may be just the right place for you, especially if you are looking for a small college with a highly dedicated and talented faculty, a place where you can feel at home while also expanding your horizons, preparing for your future, and fulfilling your dreams.
We Springfield College English professors pride ourselves on our small classes, and we take a personal interest in each of our students. Above all, we work hard to provide the best education possible--an education that stresses both imaginative and critical thinking, with a curriculum that stays abreast of the changing times.
Springfield College’s mission is to educate students in spirit, mind, and body to enter into professions which serve humanity. Many of our graduates are teachers—either at the elementary or the secondary level. Some have gone on to graduate school and now themselves teach in colleges or universities. Others have gone on to law school or have landed positions as editors or in the communications field.
Preparation for leadership is also a crucial part of our mission, and there are plenty of opportunities to take leadership roles here on campus. We have recently added an English internship to our curriculum which will offer curricular hands-on experience out in the world or on campus, using the broad range of skills acquired as an English major.
Please come and visit us soon, take in a class, walk around our beautiful campus, and meet students who are already here. Come and talk with some of our faculty members and hear about their academic and creative publications, their presentations here and abroad, and their commitment to their profession. Absorb how inspiring they can be and how interested they are in you and your success in life.
If you choose to attend Springfield College, your years here will surely be amongst the best in your life. It is rare to come across a student who does not love life on this campus.
Dr. Margaret Lloyd
Chair of the Humanities Department and Professor of English
